Application for Conference Attendance Support

The OBTS Teaching Society for Management Educators maintains the New Teacher Development Fund, created from generous contributions of its members, to facilitate the attendance of new faculty members to the OBTC conference. This support does not normally cover all expenses, but it may cover the majority of expenses depending on how much is required for travel to and from the conference site. It is available on a one-time only basis as funds allow.

Preference will be given to first-time attendees. If you fit the above criteria and would be interested in attending our next conference, please fill out the information requested below and provide a maximum one-page, double-spaced statement describing your need for the financial support and why you should receive it. Please return the form and the statement to Kenneth Rhee at rhee@nku.edu before February 15. Any questions can be directed to the scholarship coordinator/s listed. You will be notified of your award status by March 1.

What new teachers can teach experienced faculty & vice versa

For several years we have been having conversations about what experienced teachers can teach new faculty and what new faculty can teach experienced teachers.  As I see it, more seasoned teachers can talk about what works in the classroom to enhance student learning. What I’d love to have proposed are some “classic” experiential activities where the audience would participate and then debrief. I think the key parts would be to watch the way a “master” handles the debrief and then to discuss the variety of ways the same exercise could be used to focus on different learning goals. I know from my own classroom that many of the really early experiential activities still work, but may not be well-known to new faculty. Indeed sometimes they get invented again and proposed to OBTC. This year I am saying that I’ll allow those, as long as there is a strong focus on the debriefing part.

I believe that one of the things newer faculty can bring to those of us who are far removed from grad school is to update us on the important content, especially on topics that are beyond our own special areas of interest. These resource presentations should include a summary of key concepts on the topic you choose, a list of possible teaching materials to consider and a bibliography. I’m not asking for an exhaustive list of all the literature on a topic, but rather a thoughtful consideration of what (in your opinion) should be taught. Personalizing this a bit, I’ve never done research on motivation, yet need to teach the topic each semester in several different classes. I’m sure some doctoral student or junior faculty is doing research on motivation and is up-to-date with all the literature. What I’m asking you to do is to identify the things I should be aware of and including in my class. Give me a summary of these and a bibliography of sources for me to explore. It would also help if you could include some suggestions on cases, readings, experiential activities, etc. Of course I’d welcome proposals for resource presentations on any mainstream OB topic. Please note that only for proposals for resource presentations, the page limit will be 12 double-spaced pages rather than 6 pages.

I hope these notes on the various subthemes will help you to develop your proposals. We will welcome other sessions that don’t fit any of the subthemes. If you have questions or would like to discuss ideas, please write to this blog or to Joe Seltzer at seltzer@lasalle.edu
